Lesson 3 - Issue Researcher & Discoverer

Hello! Advanced Challenge Sirs Discoverer. (K-9)
1) Third grader who reads below grade level needs articles on the solar system... I started with the advanced search located colorful squares looking for easy (green), not a large number of articles, a few including "Our Solar System" a 2009 article with great pictures and LOVE the photo illustration of planets.
2) Two ways you can use SIRS Discoverer to find maps/images of volcanoes. Using all keywords, then eliminating words to get better results. Choosing Encyclopedia & World Almanac, limited searches, went into Discover Webfind in subject headings under volcanoes listed 18. Looking further I located pictures on the right side under Database Features and 105 graphics appeared. Looking at a few from diagram (Nyiragongo Volcano and city of Goma) is a bit of a nail biter. The mushroom cloud of ash from Mount Pinatubo Volcano: Erupting  on June 12, 1991 taken from inside a naval base.

SIRS Issues Researcher (Grades 6-12)
1) Committee of teachers needs good websites about suicide prevention for teens. Leading issues, mental health lead to subject of suicide. though it doesn't give websites maybe starting with the Interactive quiz could be an eye-opener, it lets you know if you are right or wrong on questions and gives explanations. Using advanced search using keywords suicide prevention, teen suicide websites getting 13 websites at the most. The fall back would be a Google search for teen suicide/suicide prevention there are countless .gov and .org sites.
2) Recent drought is causing your town to consider restriction on water use. Again Leading Issues supports the subject of Water use. Town meetings can get heated, so sporting the Pro's and Cons on water usage, research tools starting points for discussion. Using advanced search looking for water conservation, articles by date. Going a step further with environmental locating over 1000, added South Dakota town drops the number considerably to 74 with most current 2010. The original "water use" would be good start points.
Would like to spend more time with both of these databases, good information.

Thanks for the great post--I think your discoveries are very good. In SIRS Discoverer, the "Maps" is also searchable so you may be able to find different volcanoes that way--though your way was effective too!
Great ideas for being an informed citizen about water restrictions.
Thanks,
-Julie
