Lesson 5 - Gale Virtual Reference Library

Hello,
I started this once and with the variety of keywords I used, a stunning zero results out of 76,903. So, I’m giving this another try. Civic organization is sponsoring community event “Spring Holidays Around the World”. Find Spring festival traditions from a variety of countries. A) Under subjects I aimed for Multicultural Studies opening to find Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of World Cultures, 2012. Entering the Table of Contents there is a list countries, I opened several countries to read a little about each, but I searched within for “Spring festivals” and “Spring traditions”. China has a spring holiday called Ching Ming or Qing Mang. They celebrate with a cold food feast, requiring no cooking a custom is no household fires before Qing Mang.  I turned to the Advanced Search typing in keywords and one item came up for the Ukraine. They celebrate Easter, called Velykden (pronounced vuh-LICK-den; Great Day).  B) The food for Ching Ming is often uncooked rice, noodles, unpeeled fruit and vegetables. The food of the Ukraine is many, paska a Ukranian Easter bread and a recipe is given, large amount of flour making only 2 loaves. The bread is braided and brushed with egg and water. I then redirected my search using Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods and Recipes of the World opening food for religious and holiday celebrations, more recipes for China but not for the Ching Ming spring festival. Also into Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of World Holidays 2000 C) Spring festival games, crafts, starting with Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of World Holidays, I opened the volumes and choosing the volume with holidays. I couldn’t figure out how to get to where I was so I typed in the search box Ching Ming and I located, but images were different and some context. Chinese families make elaborate paper offerings for their ancestors. The offerings are burned during ceremonies in order to release their essence to the spirits. With the Ukraine I used the Holiday Encyclopedia typing in search box Ukraine, their craft or game (folklore) where children make a warm nest outside for the Easter bunny lining the nest with grass or moss, natural materials would be used by the Easter bunny to make the dyes that colored her eggs.
2.) Recently added 2012 titles…Unsure of what to look for, was it the spring festivals? So I cut and paste Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods and Recipes 2012 surely something would come up limiting audience, subject and language, zero results of 76,903 results. I may be making this lesson harder than it may be, making simple choices, selecting and limiting and getting few to zero results. I gave it my best, there must be a way to search quicker, I didn't find it, but would like to spend more time. Onward to lesson 6.

Thank you for posting such a thorough discussion about GVRL. You did a great job of looking at the features. I find it useful to think about GVRL as reference books (just located online). If you can find the time to become familiar with the various titles (like a physical reference collection) it may be easier to use.
