Lesson 3: SIRS

Hello! Another exciting week of learning! SIRS Discoverer I selected Wild Horses. Viewing articles I could see the progession of age levels. Articles ranged from 2011 back to 1994, some have pictures, subjects and even activities. The camera, letter a and apple are items that all grade levels would understand. I read several articles, lept out of several and became overly engrossed in others. A great reading tool for students.
"Database features": Country facts: WOW! I counted 204 countries all have subjects and pictures. Opening Fiji, the teacher resources give 3 levels of easy, moderate and challenging. From pronunciation of the country to history time line of the country which I think is a great resource.
"Maps of the World" Nigeria, any of these countries would be a great geography class. Again, pronunciation, languages used, population, size, terrain, health statistics. A great library tool, travel the world from your chair!
Another Database feature I chose was Pictures: Wild horses, only 7 items were retrieved, photo's and paintings. Typing in horses and the world opened up. Stunning pictures of mix emotions. Sorrowful(war), beautiful, wild and comical from Pack Horse Librarians to Willow the horse visiting nursing homes residents. I could easily get lost and if students or adults are looking they'll do the same.

SIRS Issues Researcher I selected the topic Bullying, global controversy of punishment of students in the classroom exists, pro's and con's of using the paddle as "ok'd" by parents. Videos, resources of magazines, newspapers and media. Bullying starts early, detected good information for teachers, parents and debate. Advanced search current 2012 back to 1994.
Curriculum Pathfinders I chose Fine Arts/Dance, from ballet to ballroom. Articles ranged to artists not just in dance, but artists, painters, sculptor's and biography's. Articles have summary's, URL's and descriptors, resources from American Ballet Theatre, Public Broadcasting Service and Library of Congress. Again, quite engrossed in information, some off spun in-depth subjects.
A plethora of information.

Hi, Pub Place, yes, digging around in SIRS can really transport you! Thanks for your comments here. (I'm off to do a "horses" search, so I can see what you saw!)
