Lesson 8: ArchiveGrid & CAMIO

Time simply ran out last week. Lessons done, my writing waits for today.
Discover Exercise Part 1
"Sitting Bull autograph card" Sitting Bull, 1834-1890, was a Shaman & leader of Hunpapa Sioux. He led Indian warriors against US soldiers at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He toured with Buffalo Bill Cody and died resisting arrest to abandon tradition of the Ghost Dance.
I searched for the "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln", of the portrait itself one result, giving only one location after clicking the title. University of Virginia, clicking on that gave contact information. Twenty-five results were located. Wording of subject seems to be crucial pending on subject and results. Nice how the OCLC# is provided. Clicking on READ MORE didn't give more information. Computer sluggish.

CAMIO
Paul Revere was quite a Silversmith, beautiful and articulate work. Sons of Liberty Bowl, neatly inscribed; tankard, goblet, sauceboat, teaspoon, the list carrys on.
"Sioux" I've always been awed by beadwork. The results I found were paintings, sculptures, dolls, costumes and jewelry.

I searched for various artists, not locating results, so I used Ansel Adams because a gallery is coming to Sioux Falls soon. Results found were 17 items. Refine from date to subjects. Click on picture, can enlarge a specific area by cropping and dragging. I can email, print and save and I can change the language.

Since not all my searches had results, I wasn't locating present items. If a researcher was trying to locate a specific painting or sculptor this is ideal.

Staying with the native theme I typed in Native American artifacts locating 1 result, the Magnolia Vast mfg by Tiffany & Co. NY active mfg from 1937 to present, it is beautiful. Not enough for a slide show. Choosing the advanced search, I typed in Native American and/or Native Indian choosing Library of Congress and Minneapolis 14 results were found. Some of the results were native indians from India. Was a bit taken back, as there must be artifacts in closer museums, maybe shouldn't be. The slideshow would be great for Social Studies class, for serious researchers they might even be willing to travel to museums. Good site, fun searching!

Thanks for your good comments, Pub Place. Both of these resources lend themselves to field trips, but CAMIO is like the world's best art institutes coming to you!
