Lesson 9 - History and Genealogy Resources - Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps

Hello!
1.)...heard that the Titanic has a sister ship or two. Try AncestryLibrary's "Ship Pictures and Descritpions". Using Search drop down arrow, I clicked on "Immigration and Travel" opening category's on the right side to "Ship Pictures and Descriptions". Typing "Titanic' in search box with results of six ships, of the six ships were of the White Star Line. Because it rhyme's and I didn't know the Titanic had a, much less 2 sister ships I'm going with rhyming with Britannic. The largest British liner built prior t the Queen Mary. The Britannic was sunk by mines, a loss of 21 lives of over 1,000. The Britannic is similar to the Titanic and the Olympic.
The Olympic years in service 1911-1934 and displays a photo. The anchors alone weights 7 3/4 tons with a price tag of $7 million to build. After the Titanic sinking the construction was altered to serve as a troopship for WWI. Withdrawn from service in 1935 and dismantled in 1937. The Olympic was the sister ship to the Titanic. My stepfather had a deep interest in the Titanic, in his readings I hope he saw the sister ships and their history. Good lesson, very interesting.
2.) Student working on a report about the dirigible, Hindenburg. Again using the drop down arrow in Search box opening Newspapers and Periodicals typing in keyword Hinderberg. Through a series of clicking an article appeared from the OSIA (Order Sons of Italy in America) a newer article (1953-1995) of the German Zeppelin, the Hindenberg. "Who destroyed the Hindenberg?" By A.A. Norling. Thirty-five people perished in the fire. The largest of the airships constructed. The last trip was made during Nazi power. The "German dirigible" had a impressive safety record they thought it was impossible for destruction.
3.) Your county is celebrating a big anniversary, townsfolk want historical info. HeritageQuest collection and results.Choosing PERSI, by it's description, then Places choosing state (SD), county (Potter) and keyword (celebrations) removing as zero results. Four result appeared beginning with Civil War Veterans. With known repositories, choosing Family History Library and then going to the earliest date (Oct. 1982; V.1,Issue1), choosing the Cemetary list...Potter County isn't listed. So, I returned to the 2 listings starting the search with Books and Places using Lebanon, SD adding names and keywords, removing keywords to produce results. Of the results no information of Lebanon was found, changing Places to Bowdle, SD. Both town have celebrated their 125th celebrations, I was sure something would result. History of Dakota Territory was one of the four results dated 1905. In contents Vol. 1, Chapter L, Dakota's First Railroad built at home and Chapter LII 1875 Railroad Matters Subject of Long Lawsuit. Chapter LVII 1973 The Coming fo the German Russians talks of Dakota Territory as a whole. Even though not asked to go into Sanborn Maps. The previous searches and various years gave layout of towns. I do like using Sanborn Maps, so much history, change and layout. Though my findings weren't conclusive for county results, this was enjoyable. Thanks.

Interesting results! In Heritage Quest, the books may have produced some interesting results for the communities you were searching for. Another thing I struggle to remember when searching in the historical resources is many of our current abbreviations are not recognized (SD may be South Dakota) (Wisconson is abbreviated Wis)
Thanks for your post!
